In the end, it wasn't nuclear weapons that proved the downfall of Humanity. Nor was it the machines they automated and gave life. It was the worst of the simple crimes Human beings commit that destroyed their world. Primal emotions cause people to act in primal ways. Fear and ignorance gave way to savagery. These things happen to the best of us. We forgot what it was to be Human. With no incentive to act in a civilized manner, we stopped being civilized people. The horrible things we did to ourselves and others, and more importantly, the horrible things we did too our children were unforgivable.
We thought giving power to authority again would save us from ourselves. Right and wrong are choices we make in our lifetimes as Sentinents. The universal network was the greatest peaceful achievement Human beings achieved by Human beings. Its collective power allowed any Human being to have anything his heart desired. Human beings abused it. The Universal network brought out the most wonderful innovation in us all, it empowered everyone. At the same time however, the people who lacked the wisdom, maturity, and education brought a kind of evil unrivaled.
People cried out for order and law again, but one mistake compounds another. Replacing anarchy with tyranny doesn't make things right, in fact it often makes things worse.
We could have had anything we wanted. We squandered our chance. Thus the MS was allowed to reign supreme. If people cannot be trusted to maintain their own lives the rich and well educated should make those choices for us, or at least thats what the MS believed.
People wanted the to MS to protect us from the evil they could see, the evil they couldn't see, and the evil they only thought existed, the evil within themselves. Absolute power corruputs. The power that Humans entrusted to their leaders who intern trusted the MS were betrayed and abused by the MS. This is what happens when fear runs rampant and unchecked. The fear that the Universal network created was worse than the fear of strangers, foreigners and traitors to the state, it was the fear of ourselves.
